Fire Hoses

Hi,

I have two question regarding apartment/condo fire hoses.

(1st) - Property managers believe that they do not need service 5/3 year H-testing on fire hoses, due to the fact that nobody uses them and the fire dept uses their own fire hoses.

(2nd) - NFPA 1961/62 states that fire hoses prior to 1987 be removed from service. Does this only apply to fire department hoses.

Thank you.

If the hoses are present, the must be tested in accordance with the requirements of NFPA 1962. They must also be inspected annually. Your reference is NFPA 25 (2008) Table 6.2.2 "Standpipe and Hose Systems".

Hoses in place prior to 1987 are usually of the unlined variety and must be replaced with lined hoses. Fire department hoses are used far more frequently and are likely maintained to a higher standard. Not sure if the same requirement applies though. The issue with unlined hoses had more to do with deterioration of the fabric due to improper drying and poor inspection methods for hoses installed in fixed hose racks.
