Sprinkler head drop or heat detectors

Post by Frank » Mon Dec 09, 2013 4:43

Conducting annual inspection at an Elderly People Home. The home installed a new furnace in a 20 ft. by 20 ft. basement room with sprinkler head protection. The contractor built another room 4 ft. by 8 ft. around the furnace. The room that the furnace is in has no fire protection. Can I install heat detectors instead of sprinkler heads inside the furnace room. Most of the basement rooms and hallway have sprinkler protection, with a few smoke detectors and pulls.

Thank you.

If the original room had sprinkler protection, you're going to have to extend it into the new "floor area" as well. I'm surprised this "addition" wasn't properly inspected by a local Building Inspector. He would have caught that immediately. Does a sprinkler "flow" annunciate on the fire alarm panel? Are the valves supervised? Good "catch" by the way! :)
